The studio
An ikenga is commissioned, not inherited.
In Igbo practice, an ikenga is a carved figure a person commissions for their own right hand — the hand that works. It stands for what you have done with your own strength, and it is kept where it can be seen. That is the whole brief for this label.
Where the work starts
Every piece begins as a drawing rather than a mood board. We work from three sources and keep returning to them: Uli, the Igbo tradition of line drawing applied to skin and walls, spare and never quite symmetrical; Nsibidi, an ideographic script used across the Cross River region long before the Latin alphabet arrived; and the ikenga figure itself, with its horns and its grounded base.
A drawing gets reduced until only the line carrying meaning is left. If a mark cannot survive being printed at 40mm on a chest, it was decoration rather than design. What comes out the other side is deliberately quiet: the reference is there for anyone who knows it, and the garment still reads as a good garment for anyone who does not.
Why it is not a “heritage print” brand
There is a version of African design made for export — loud wax-print panels, motifs lifted without their grammar, an aesthetic of otherness. We are not making that. The references here belong to a living culture and are treated as a design language with rules, not a decorative library.
The result is a label that should sit comfortably in a wardrobe anywhere in Nigeria, anywhere in Europe, or anywhere else in the world — without translation, and without apology for where it is from.
How it is made
Everything is printed or embroidered after you order it, at the production facility closest to your address. That is a deliberate constraint. Nothing is manufactured on a forecast, so nothing sits in a warehouse and nothing is destroyed at the end of a season. It costs a few days more in delivery; it saves the part of this industry that is hardest to defend.
Garments are chosen for weight and longevity first: 240gsm combed cotton for tees, 400gsm brushed-back fleece for hoodies, 16oz canvas for the totes. We would rather sell one piece that lasts six years than three that last one.
